FIVE SPACE SAVING IDEAS FOR A SMALL LIVING ROOM

If your living room feels particularly small, maybe you visit friends or family and feel like their houses are much bigger than yours. Well, you’re probably right as according to a study made by LABC Warranty our houses are getting smaller, and have been ever since the 1930s. Smaller houses bring up two major problems. Firstly, how do you make sure you have all the items of furniture you need? And secondly, how do you find the right furniture, so your home doesn’t become a cluttered mess. Well luckily, we’re here to help. We’ve brought 5 tips to help you save space so you can have all the right furniture in your living room without losing on valuable space. So where to start?

1. Let Light Shine Through

Natural light is an easy and cost-effective way of bringing the illusion of space to a small area. Don’t block any natural light that can pour into your room, ensure you either don’t cover the windows or add a thin curtain so the light will still stream through. This image from Sven Brandsma displays a light and airy space, with natural light that flows through the room. Blinds have been used to cover the windows in this interior, a stylish yet effective way of adding light.

2. Reflect Mirrors

Adding a mirror to your small space is an ingenious way of bringing extra light and the feeling of space to a living area. Mirrors (as I’m sure you are aware of) reflect but reflecting your living area will make a tight space feel more open. This almost feels like cheating, it's so obvious but many of you may be completely unaware that adding a mirror will literally double the visual size of your space. It isn’t just a large mirror that you can add, as mirrored furniture like storage units and dressing tables are now all the rage and look great in living spaces.

3. Hanging Objects

Adding a piece of furniture or in this case, a plant that hangs from the ceiling saves space and is also quite a unique look to have in your home. Hang a plant, light or even a chair in the corner of your room to save on your valuable floor space.

4. Minimal

People always say less is more, and that saying has never been truer for decorating a small living space. Go with light coloured colours and pick your necessities. Like this image below all the basics are there, they’re all light in colour with greys and whites. None of the furniture takes up too much space either. The light tones open up the room keeping your living area looking bright and spacious.

5. Utilise The Space

Your small room is much bigger than you think, and you’ll often forget how much space you can utilise in your room. If you’re struggling for space, add in floating shelves so you can pop books, ornaments and trinkets so you can save on space so its clutter-free. Ottomans and footstools are another neat way of storing items, as they usually come with storage beneath, they also bring an extra space for you to perch should guests come over.
